We talk with enthusiasm and passion but we listen begrudgingly. This starts from a young age and as we progress in our professional careers there is even greater emphasis placed on talking. What does it mean to listen with intent?
Take the multi-tasking challenge. Not, can you do more of it but can you not do it at all. Yes, we all CAN multi-task but is it really serving you and those around you. A common concern I hear is that people don’t feel supported both at work and at home. I wonder how much of that is people not feeling seen and heard.
Who is the reluctant leader? The individual with very strong functional expertise and based on his or her ability rises through the ranks to a leadership position. They are in this position and the expectation is that they will be proficient leaders and managers. Unfortunately, most aren’t prepared.
Most people interview against a job description. That makes sense, right. However, today’s job descriptions are longer than most people’s resume and read more like a wish list. I wonder if there is a slightly different approach. Maybe you should interview for the job you want.
It’s not unusual for us to become paralyzed into inaction. We want to take action do things but we’re feeling the weight of these decisions and the implications they may have on those around us.
